That bodes well for the fantasy scoring prospects of the Redskins

The Seahawks improved upon their pass rush totals against the Texans by posting a 33.3 percent PPR, but that was actually a lower number than the 38.7 PPR Houston had allowed in the five weeks prior to the this contest. The Seattle defense also did next to nothing to keep the Texans from posting the second-highest YPA of 2017 (13.4), second-highest yards per completion (19.3) and third-highest air yards per attempt (14.8) of the 2017 campaign.

Add it all up and it shows that the Seahawks defense may be the most overrated platoon in the NFL, Cardinals and Falcons (Seattle’s next three opponents), so be sure to keep that mind when weighing start/sit decisions in those contests.

“Think about it: It’s the first time since LeBron came back that we had that many new guys,” Thompson said. “It’s the first time, so it’s going to be a process. It’s going to take some time. It’s a long f—ing season. We’re going to play a hundred-and-some f—ing games. I’m not worried about it.”

Because the major league players were otherwise occupied, Team USA was made up of collegians — good collegians, such as Jason Varitek, Charles Johnson, Jason Giambi and an 18-year-old shortstop from Georgia Tech named Nomar Garciaparra. “It was like boys versus men,” says Garciaparra, a six-time All-Star who now broadcasts for SportsNet LA. “But it was an experience I’ll never forget.”

The Warriors lost only twice total at Oracle Arena in both their 2015 championship year and again in the 73-win season that followed, then just five times at home on the way to another title last

Eagles face Cardinals looking to go 4-1

The Philadelphia Eagles will look to strengthen their position in the NFC with a matchup against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field.

Palmer has thrown for 1,282 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions while under heavy pressure most of the time. Their offensive line has allowed 17 sacks this season.

It started Sunday in the immediate aftermath of their dismantling of the Tennessee Titans and lingered Wednesday as Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien continued shifting the focus from celebrating that win to preparing to face the lone undefeated team in the NFL.

O’Brien essentially entered his postgame press conference with a wet blanket in hand, poised to smother the hoopla surrounding the record-setting performance of rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Three days later, when asked if the team recognized Watson for claiming AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors following his five-touchdown performance in a 57-14 victory, O’Brien was quick to stamp out that bit of enthusiasm as well. What had passed was past.

“No. I think it’s a great honor, but no,” O’Brien said. “We’re definitely focused on Kansas City. I think, at the end of the day, I think those awards are great. I really do. I think it’s a great honor for him to get that as a rookie, but I think the goal of every week is to make sure we’re focused on the task at hand.”magic_042

Former Buckeyes, NFL receiver Anthony Gonzalez files paperwork for Congress run

Anthony Gonzalez is preparing for a new career in Washington.

The former Colts receiver doesn’t have a tryout scheduled with the Redskins. The 32-year-old Ohio native has filed the necessary paperwork to run for Congress, according to a filing obtained by the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

While he has not formally announced his candidacy, Gonzalez is expected to run for Ohio’s 16th congressional seat in 2018. That seat will be left vacant by incumbent Jim Renacci, a Republican who is planning a gubernatorial run.

The Chiefs re-signed Spiller after initially releasing him. While Spiller is long removed from his best NFL season, he still has some upside as a receiving back in the Chiefs’ conservative offense.

West has been with the Chiefs for two years now, so he understands the team’s blocking schemes. Hunt will begin the season as the team’s starter, but blitz pickup is usually one of the toughest things for rookie running backs to perfect, and it could be the biggest detriment to his playing time this season.

Kansas City gets the 2017 NFL season kicked off Thursday night with a difficult game against the Patriots. The Chiefs’ run game will be pivotal in that contest to help keep the ball out of Tom Brady’s hands.bears_005-223x223

Kyrie Irving is headed to Boston

It’s telling that the Patriots’ odds of winning the Super Bowl are twice that of any other team and virtually identical to that of the bottom 16 teams in the league combined. Even after losing Julian Edelman to a season-ending torn ACL, it’s hard to find a place on the Patriots’ roster where they would fall apart or otherwise be susceptible to a serious decline in the case of an injury. If the Pats somehow lost Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo to long-term injuries, they might be in trouble, but what’s to say Bill Belichick couldn’t sign Colin Kaepernick and win a division titleHe nearly won one with Matt Cassel in 2008.

Kyrie Irving is headed to Boston, and we’ve already been shown how weird that is going to be. Joe Haden, meanwhile, signed with the Steelers and it’s hard to imagine Browns fans getting used to him in black and gold.

Seeing both players in their new jerseys will take some getting used to. But, as Cleveland sports fans know, Irving and Haden are not the first to travel this road. Cleveland’s sports history is full of fan favorites who starred for the Browns, Cavaliers and Indians, then found themselves playing for new cities.

“Rep The Squad is truly unique and the concept immediately resonated with me,” added Sherman in a statement. “As players, we also like wearing different jerseys from various sports when we’re off the field. That’s the flexibility Rep The Squad brings to the table.”

Raiders’ Marshawn Lynch sits during national anthem

Another season, another controversy surrounding the national anthem.

Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch remained seated during the national anthem prior to the team’s 20-10 loss to the Cardinals in their preseason opener.

In his first game back since the 2015 season, Lynch was dressed in uniform but did not play. Instead of standing for the song, he sat on a cooler while holding a banana.

Smith, 22, suffered nerve damage when he tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee in his Notre Dame team’s Fiesta Bowl Jan. 1, 2016, an injury so severe many thought he’d never play again.

The Cowboys drafted him with the No. 34 pick in 2016 and he has been rehabbing the knee since.

Smith has been wearing a brace on his knee during training camp, but participated in drills and scrimmages without issue. He said the brace isn’t limiting him too much and that he “feels explosive” and is moving fast. He ended Cowboys practice Monday with a “sack” of Kellen Moore.

“I’ve been feeling great,” Smith told reporters Monday. “For us it’s just about getting reps. That’s something that I’ve gotten. We’ll finish up this week and see if they’ll let me go.

“I’m really looking forward to be able to contribute this year. When they call my number, I’ll be ready.”

The actions by Adidas show what happens when an organization does not support those tasked with protecting the integrity of the game. We support the referee community. This offensive behavior cannot stand [and] hurts all those involved in basketball.”

It was also an opportunity for us to set the standard for that team coming back and what we want it to be moving forward. We were gonna have a good time together, but we were gonna work. That’s what that trip is all about.dolphins_078

Sean Payton’s obsession hinges on a better Saints defense

Sean Payton turns 54 on Dec. 29 and is in his 12th season as New Orleans Saints head coach. He was an NFL assistant coach for nine seasons before that. He was a college coach for nine seasons before that.

But the way Payton views it, he is only in the middle of his NFL coaching career. A Super Bowl XLIV championship in 2010, a “Bountygate” suspension for the entire 2012 season, an undisputed status as one of the NFL’s cleverest offensive minds, and three straight 7-9, non-playoff seasons entering Saints training camp on Thursday morning coalesce to form his view on the game and his “obsession.”

Penn, 34, was a Pro Bowler at left tackle for the Raiders in 2016, but is running out of time to get significant chunks of money in his NFL career. He’s in the second season of a two-year, $11.9 million deal and is set to make $7.15 million in 2017.

But other offensive linemen on the team like Kelechi Osemele and Gabe Jackson received huge contracts worth $58 and $55 million, respectively, over five years each.

Yet the Raiders still have more than $9 million in salary cap space after dishing out those contracts and the blockbuster deal that Derek Carr received earlier in the offseason.

Other stars on the team like Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper are due for contracts soon, but adding a year or two on Penn’s contract, or restructuring to dish out a little bit more in 2017, is doable.

Penn, like most other holdouts, doesn’t have a ton of leverage, but he’s due to become a free agent in 2018. If the Raiders want to keep him protecting Carr’s blindside beyond 2017, it may be wise to throw him a bone.

Manu Ginobili attempts to miss foul shot, instead makes absurd free throw

The Spurs were down by three points with 2.5 seconds left in Wednesday night’s game against the Trail Blazers and Manu Ginobili was at the foul line. There wasn’t enough time left to let Portland have a possession, so Ginobili’s strategy was the following: Make the first free throw, intentionally miss the second free throw and have a teammate rebound and put a shot up.

“There are passions in his life,” Brown said. He was also quick to clarify there are no health issues with Alexander.

Alexander bought the team for $85 million in 1993. According to a Forbes estimate, the Rockets are now worth roughly $1.65 billion.

Although Alexander mentioned selling the team in the past, Brown said his final decision was a surprise. Since the team management is already secure, Brown said there wasn’t a deadline to sell the team.

The Rockets have already made huge moves this offseason, signing James Harden to the largest contract extension in NBA history and trading for Chris Paul.

The team also signed general manager Daryl Morey to an extension.

There are a couple of ways the Celtics puts Thomas in position to succeed within those lineups, the most obvious being the pick-and-roll.

Thomas scores around a third of his points on the season out of the pick-and-roll and he ranks in the 94.4 percentile with 1.07 points per possession. Horford is an ideal pick-and-roll partner for him because he’s an excellent screener, and he has the ability to pop or roll depending on the coverage. Simply spreading the floor and running a high pick-and-roll with them is often the best way to get Thomas going because he can pull-up if the opposing big hangs back or take him off the dribble if the defender gets too close.magic_042

We’ve come this far without mentioning the Wizards’ unsightly road record

During the game itself, Thomas and the Celtics had difficulty maintaining consistency on offense, and tight defense on both sides (Boston shot 43.0 percent, Chicago shot 42.9 percent) led to heightened emotions. Neither team led by more than five points in the first three quarters, and the tension of the game was amplified by the fact that opposite Thomas was former Celtics hero point guard Rajon Rondo, who drew round jeering for much of the game.

Thomas was whistled for a technical foul with 6:33 to play in the fourth quarter after he argued being called for a kicked ball on a drive to the basket against Bulls big man Cristiano Felicio. On the following possession, during a jump ball on Chicago’s end, Bradley slapped at Butler’s hand, initiating a jaw-flapping standoff between the two, who were separated by officials.

With 5:33 to play in the game, Thomas was sent to the line thanks to a Rondo foul on a 3-point attempt. It was the game’s most poignant moment — the entire crowd was nearly silent as Thomas hoisted his first attempt. He made all three, giving the Celtics an 88-87 lead. But they would not hold it. Chicago scored the next eight points to seize control of the game.

We’ve come this far without mentioning the Wizards’ unsightly road record: 19-22. Washington was actually a pretty good road team beginning with a win in New York on January 19 — the Wizards were 15-9 on the road to close the year. They did lose two out of the three games in Atlanta, and their road woes could come up again in this series, especially with the bench’s struggle to play away from home. The Celtics have more depth and the home-court edge. Both will be factors here. Celtics in 7.jets_005

LaVar and Big Baller docuseries coming to Facebook

Call him LaVar Kardashian because he’s about to open his and his entire family’s lives to cameras 24 hours a day.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Facebook has ordered two new original series, one featuring Mike Rowe of “Dirty Jobs” and the other focusing on the Ball family and the world surrounding the life of a newly drafted Laker in Lonzo and the drama one man can bring upon a family in LaVar.

Now, there are conflicting reports on Hayward’s decision. While Haynes, ESPN’s Zach Lowe and USA Today’s Sam Amick initially confirmed Hayward planned to sign with the Celtics, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski,’s David Aldridge and multiple other reputable NBA reporters say nothing is final.

Hayward averaged career-highs in points (21.9) and rebounds (5.4) this past season for the Jazz and led them past the Clippers in the first round of the 2017 NBA playoffs before falling to the Warriors in the Western Conference semifinals. He would give any team a terrific all-around offensive threat and a strong defender on the wing.

Stay tuned. This isn’t over just yet.

It isn’t just about apologetic statements (more on that later) and suspensions; the larger challenge is the messages young players receive while forming their beliefs about people who might be different than themselves.

“The question we need to ask ourselves, as we do in any other space, is, ‘What are the traditions we’re handing down?’” said Jeff Perera, a gender equality advocate and Blue Jays fan who has spoken about healthy masculinity for nine years throughout North America. “Owning these traditions also means owning their genuine impact.”browns_005

Who’s the perfect general manager for every NFL team?

The Colts finally fired Ryan Grigson this year, and they had a productive offseason and a solid draft. It’s pretty clear letting the orangutan from the zoo make three of those picks was a stroke of brilliance. Just let him run the whole dang team. As an added bonus it will really piss off Mike Mayock.

This one would have leveled the playing field for coaches who are in the mix for promotions with other teams but are still leading their current team through the playoffs. Instead, the rule will stay the same, and a coach won’t be able to reach an agreement with a new team until his team has been eliminated from the postseason.

Harbaugh agrees with O’Brien, and thinks that a 10-minute overtime is plenty of time to determine a sudden-death winner.

“Usually by 10 minutes it seems like everyone’s just trying to survive the last five.”

On the other hand, Saints quarterback Drew Brees isn’t as convinced.

“From what I see I would disagree with it because I think more games are going to end in ties now,” Brees said on The Dan Patrick Show. “That additional five minutes, especially with the way the rules changed, to where in essence both teams get a possession, right? Unless somebody goes down and scores a touchdown right away. So I think what we already saw with the new rules of, if a field goal can’t win it on the first possession, I think we’ve seen more ties.”

Instead, Brees is a fan of college overtime rules, where both teams get possession of the ball starting at the opponent’s 25-yard line.

“I think you’re reducing the number of plays, it’s exciting for fans, it’s situational football,” he said.
